Have you ever considered what makes you stand out from others? Are there any skills or attributes you believe set you apart from others?
Everyone is unique and has skills and attributes that differentiate them from others.
Recognising this, interviewers are increasingly asking candidates what makes them unique. This helps them understand where candidates see themselves and the skills they offer.
So, what’s behind the question, and how can you answer it effectively?
Why do employers ask this question?
· They want to assess your unique skills: Employers ask this question to understand the skills and attributes you could bring to their team.
· Makes candidates memorable: Asking this question can help the interviewer separate candidates from one another. Therefore, giving an effective answer to this question could help you leave a lasting impression on the interviewer.
· It helps illustrate your values and work ethic: How you answer this question can reveal a lot about your values and work ethic and how well you fit into a team.
· They want to see your confidence: Employers also want to hire confident employees. Therefore, they may ask this question to see if you are aware of your abilities and can talk about yourself in a positive manner.
How to identify your unique attributes
Start by listing your skills and any achievements you are proud of at work, school or university, your personal traits and any challenges you have overcome.
Then, to gain a broader perspective, ask your family, friends, colleagues, teachers or mentors for their perspective on what makes you unique.
You should also consider any positive compliments you have received from colleagues, family or friends.
If you can’t think of a specific unique skill you have, consider whether you have a unique set of skills. For example, are you really good at writing AND audio editing?
Once you have developed your list, take a look at the job description. See if there are any requirements listed that match the items on your list.
How to structure your answer
You should structure your answer using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). This is a proven way to effectively articulate your unique traits.
Start by sharing your unique trait. Then, think of an example of a time when you used this trait. Outline what you did to address the situation. Finally, state how the situation was resolved using your unique trait.
Tips when answering this question
· Avoid being too generic: It’s essential you provide specific examples of how your traits make you unique
· Steer clear of cliches: When describing your unique traits, authenticity is key. Using phrases like ‘I work too hard’ or ‘I’m a perfectionist ‘may not resonate well with the interviewer.
· Research the company: Try to tailor your answer to the role and company you are applying for. You should try to match your answer to the job description where possible. While you can give a similar answer in multiple interviews, you should tweak it slightly to reflect the specifics of each individual role.
· Keep your answer relevant: Your unique abilities should relate to the position you are applying for. For example, there’s no point saying you are a great cook if you are applying for a role as a maths teacher.
· Illustrate self awareness: Don’t say that you aren’t unique or can’t think of any unique qualities. This is unlikely to make a positive impression on the interviewer.
Successfully highlighting your unique traits allows you to show the employer why they should consider you over other candidates.
Nailing a job interview isn’t easy.
