Opportunities Aplenty: Why you should consider a career in the Queensland Public Service

Are you looking for a career in the Public Service?

Queensland could be the place to start. Not only is it an attractive place to live, but there are also a growing number of opportunities on offer, no matter your experience or skill set.

New figures released last week as part of the Queensland Public Sector Commission’s State Of The Sector report reveal that Queensland’s public service has grown by 11,700 workers in the last 12 months. This rate of growth has exceeded previous estimates.

The state government now employs 258,012 full-time employees, up from 246,309 the previous year. This represents a 4.75% increase in the last year.

Queensland’s public service has grown by over 56,000 in the past decade. The report estimates the state government now employs 8% of Queenslanders.

Thanks to the ABC, The Mandarin and the Queensland Government, we explore the key growth areas.

How has Queensland’s public service grown?
Queensland’s public service has grown across various sectors. Most government departments have seen an increase in staff in the past year. These include the Department Of Transport and Main Roads, the Department Of Justice and Attorney-General, and the Department Of Regional Development, Manufacturing & Water.

Those looking for corporate roles could be in luck.

This is where the biggest growth in the public service has occurred. In the last year, corporate public sector roles have increased by 9% in Queensland.

This is the biggest increase in this sector in four years and includes roles in marketing, human resources and accounting. However, it should be noted that the increase in corporate roles partly compensates for the staff reduction that occurred during the pandemic.

There’s also good news for those seeking a career in emergency services. As always, there is a high demand for police officers, nurses, and firefighters. In Queensland, frontline roles increased by 4.3% last year—the largest increase in four years. In five years, ambulance workers in Queensland have increased by more than 5%.

While police officer numbers fell from March 2023 to 2024, they have since increased. The state has also seen a rise in police recruitment.

For those looking to work in the education sector, plenty of opportunities are available. The state is currently experiencing a shortage of teachers.

The Queensland government plans to offer a range of incentives to further increase growth in frontline roles.
Do you enjoy the city lifestyle, or would you prefer to live in regional Queensland? Whatever the case, there are plenty of opportunities available. Growth has occurred in the Brisbane CBD and suburbs as well as the state’s regions.

There are also plenty of lucrative opportunities in Queensland’s public service sector. The last year has seen a significant increase in highly paid roles. About a quarter of Queensland public servants now earn over $120,000, a 2% increase from last year. Almost half of Queensland public servants earn over $100,000, a figure that has increased significantly in recent years.
