Have you ever considered a career as a Queensland police officer? Policing can be a challenging but rewarding career. What better place to do it than Queensland with its picturesque landscape and enviable lifestyle?
So what are the steps involved in becoming a Queensland police officer?
Eligibility assessment & Entrance Assessment
Firstly, you will need to fill out an Eligibility Assessment form. This is an initial self-assessment form that determines your eligibility to become a Queensland police officer. You will then be required to complete an entrance assessment.
Application Form
When filling out the application form, you must disclose all relevant information that may impact your eligibility or suitability for the role.
Following this, the Queensland Police recruiting department will review your eligibility to continue the application process.
Panel Interview
Applicants will undertake an interview with one or two QPS members, one of whom will be a serving Queensland police officer. Interviews will run for roughly 30 minutes and be conducted online via Microsoft Teams. Interview questions will be based on QPS values, responsibilities, key accountabilities of a general duties police officer and key policing priorities.
Tips for preparing for your interview include:
• Identify examples when you have demonstrated the QPS values: The QPS values include: Integrity, professionalism, community and respect and fairness. The QPS also shares the queensland public service values of putting the customer first and turning ideas into action.
• Identify examples when you have demonstrated the key accountabilities: Key accountabilities of the QPS include preserving peace and good order in the state, protecting and supporting the state’s community. QPS officers should also strive to prevent and detect crime, uphold the law, administer the law fairly and efficiently and bring offenders to justice. If you do not have prior policing experience, these examples do not have to be specific to police knowledge and skills.
• Familiarise yourself with the roles, responsibilities and key accountabilities of a general duties police officer
Following a successful interview, you will need to complete an integrity vetting form.
Medical and psychological tests
Prospective officers will be required to undertake a Pre-Employment Medical Screening and a Recruit Psychological Assessment. In some cases, this may involve an appointment with a psychologist.
Fitness Assessment
Being a Queensland police officer can be a physically demanding role and include periods of intense and strenuous physical activity.
The fitness test includes:
• Prone bridge test: Applicants are required to hold their body in a straight line from shoulders to ankles for at least 90 seconds
• Push ups: Applicants are required to perform 10 push ups at a rate of one every 2 seconds.
• 20 metre beep test
• Swimming test: You are required to swim 100m untimed in any stroke without stopping and without your feet or hands touching the side or bottom of the pool.
Following this, the Queensland police service will undertake reference checks.
If successful, you will be allocated a posting. As part of this process, it is important to record your preferred locations and any extenuating circumstances.
